Owls by Moonlight 2019
A fantastic opportunity to visit Muncaster Castle in the evenings in the run-up to Christmas to enjoy a simple hot supper plus two breathtaking owl flying displays after dark.
You will arrive for 6pm in the Stable Yard at Muncaster; where you will be served a warm 2 course supper in the Old Laundry to fortify you for setting off into the night. Once settled with a hot drink our passionate and expert Bird Staff will offer a brief talk about our work in the Hawk & Owl Centre, conservation on Muncaster Estate and projects we support both locally and further afield.
The adventure then starts in earnest. We will encourage you to wrap up warm for whatever the weather may be doing before setting off to the Flying Arena within the Hawk & Owl Centre for the first captivating flying display. Owls by Moonlight contrasts beautifully with our daytime displays; the owls are in their element and appear and disappear as if by magic.
The second display is on the Flying Meadow which we approach by walking past the eerily lit Castle and pausing for a while at the Cannonbank viewpoint to consider other wildlife active after dark. The larger owls will stealthily swoop over and around you on the Meadow, accompanied with enchanting music and informative commentary with the backdrop of the beautifully lit Castle.
Owls by Moonlight gives you an unforgettable experience, watching owls in their natural habitats enjoying the winter months, and learning from Muncaster’s passionate and knowledgeable team.
This experience is available on:
Saturday 14th, Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd December 2019
£29.90 per ticket including supper and bird display (Adult) | £15.50 per ticket including supper and bird display (Child 3 - 15 years)
Please enter and park via the Churchgate Entrance just a quarter mile to the south of the Main Gate (which will be closed.) The event takes place whatever the weather and will only be cancelled if the winds are very strong. Although everyone would naturally prefer crystal clear moonlit evenings, in the past we have enjoyed high winds, lashing rain and even heavy snow yet every evening has been quite magical. It is just a bit more of an adventure if the weather is inclement! There is an opportunity to warm up again with further hot drinks if needed in the Stable Yard once the displays are over.
The cost includes a two course simple warming supper with jugs of tap water on the table and tea, coffee or hot chocolate served after pudding. Mulled wine or spiced apple will be on sale at reasonable additional cost.
We recommend bringing warm and waterproof clothing for the displays as both are outside after dark. Torches are recommended for transfer to the display arenas but please keep them turned off during the displays and although we encourage photography NO FLASH photography please as it can endanger the birds.
If you have any dietary requirements please email firstname.lastname@example.org once you have purchased your tickets. A vegetarian option is always available but please let us know in advance if vegan, dairy free or similar meals are required and we will do our best to fulfil your requirements.
